Ian Gordon is a litigator of over 25 years experience with a particular focus on resource management and employment law.

Ian was formerly a Partner at Morrison Kent where he headed the firm's Resource Management and Employment Law teams. He has extensive trial and dispute resolution experience.

A significant and challenging component of Ian's work includes aspects of infrastructure projects and policy, including:

    • advising a Requiring Authority on Public Works and Maori land issues;
    • assisting Boards of Inquiry on the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement and a called-in Wind Farm application;
    • representing The National Grid Operator at a Board of Inquiry on an application for lines relocation work associated with NZTA's State Highway RoNS project (Transmission Gully);
    • representing Wellington International Airport Limited on plan change, resource consent and designation issues; and
    • advising an energy company on strategic consent, designation and compliance issues.

Other recent work has included representing local environmental groups on appeals relating to Meridian Energy's Project Hayes Wind Farm in Central Otago, and acting for significant landowners in relation to Plan Changes in the Wakatipu Basin, on the Kapiti Coast and the Wellington Waterfront.

Ian's extensive experience as a resource management specialist includes all aspects of project advice on resource consent applications and appeals; representation in consent and plan change hearings before Councils, the Environment Court, High Court and Court of Appeal; Judicial Review and advice on designations and associated Public Works acquisition and compensation processes.

Ian has successfully represented a range of clients from major resort developer in the Wakatipu Basin to Government appointed Boards of Inquiry on consent applications for projects of national significance and national policy statements. His advocacy work includes prosecutions under the RMA and civil trials.

Ian's Employment Law experience includes advising and representing large employers in relation to complex and strategic employment related issues including the NZSO, Healthcare of New Zealand Limited, TelstraClear Limited and the Wellington Diocese of the Anglican Church.

Ian is a certified RMA Commissioner and longstanding member of the Resource Management Law Association. He is experienced in alternative dispute resolution and acts as a facilitator, mediator and independent investigator. Ian has been counsel to the Wellington Diocese of the Anglican Church and chairs the Methodist Church Disciplinary Committee. He has been a faculty member of the NZLS Litigation Skills Programme for a number of years.
